Episode 8: Uprooting the Lies We Believe

There will always be the temptation to manicure our lawns rather than plow up our fields. In today’s episode, we will talk about uprooting the lies we believe rather than simply layering the truths of God on top of them. When we manicure our lawns (or layer truth on top of our wounds and lies), we are often settling for looking better when God’s invitation is that we might live well. In this episode, we’ll consider what it would mean to dig around and uproot the lies that we believe rather than attempting to bury them deeper.

We’ll talk through a method of prayer in which we invite Jesus into the areas of our woundedness and ask Him to replace the lies that we believe with His specific truth.

>
“Others are like seed sown among thorns; these are the ones who hear the word, but the worries of this age, the deceitfulness of wealth, and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.”

— Mark 4:18-19

Invitation to Respond – the process of the prayer:

  1. Allow yourself to fully consider the circumstance and embrace the feeling that is causing the turmoil in your life.

  2. Ask the Lord if there was an earlier time in your life when you felt this same way (usually in childhood).

  3. When the memory comes to mind, explore it with the Lord.

    • How did you feel?

    • What did you believe about yourself?

  4. When you have identified the lie, resist the temptation to “talk yourself into the truth.” Instead, ask the Lord what He wants you to know in that memory! (Not in your present, adult state.) Don’t rush through this step.

    • Might see Him, might hear Him, might sense something that He wants you to know. (Go back to ways to practice hearing Him in Ep. 6.)

  5. When you sense that He has spoken His truth to you and offered you healing in that place, see if that makes the memory feel better. If so, then return to the present circumstance or situation that has brought you to this place. Does that place feel better?

  6. Sometimes there are layers. After we deal with one belief/wound, there may be another piece that the Lord wants to bring His peace/healing to.
